Shipping to Denmark from Vietnam

Shipping to Denmark from Vietnam

Ship to Denmark from Vietnam — Copenhagen, Aarhus. EVFTA duty relief, Denmark's flat 25% VAT on food, Danish labeling, door-to-door delivery.

Denmark taxes food differently from almost every other country in the EU — a flat 25% VAT with no reduced rate, on groceries and everything else alike. It’s a detail that catches people off guard when they compare a Denmark shipment’s landed cost to a Sweden or Belgium one, and it’s worth knowing before you plan a large order.

Vietnamese settlement in Denmark traces back to the boat-refugee resettlements of the 1970s and 80s, and today an officially registered 16,000+ Vietnamese community lives here, concentrated in Copenhagen with smaller hubs in Aarhus, Odense, and Aalborg — a tight-knit group, well known for the number of Vietnamese restaurants it has opened across Danish cities. Gateway Express ships in through Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Denmark’s main international gateway, with Toldstyrelsen customs clearance and Fødevarestyrelsen food-safety review handled on your behalf.

This page covers our service tiers, Denmark’s EU customs framework and EVFTA paperwork, the flat-VAT quirk, what you can and can’t ship, and where in Denmark we deliver — including the Faroe Islands and Greenland, which sit outside the EU customs area despite being part of the Danish Realm.

Shipping Services to Denmark

Service features:

  • LCL and FCL options

Customs duty (EVFTA)~99% of Vietnam-origin goods at 0%

Denmark is unusual among EU members: most countries apply a lower VAT to groceries, but Denmark charges the same 25% on food as on everything else. Denmark’s parliament confirmed in December 2025 that food VAT will not be cut before the next election; officials are discussing a possible reduction — either a general cut toward 20% or a targeted exemption for fruit and vegetables — but nothing takes effect before 2028 at the earliest. For now, budget for the full 25% on any Denmark-bound food shipment.

EVFTA paperwork

  • Shipments under €6,000: an origin declaration on the commercial invoice is sufficient
  • Shipments over €6,000: Danish customs requires the exporter’s REX (Registered Exporter) number, which we help arrange through the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce
  • Personal parcels under €150: the EU IOSS framework applies for low-value B2C imports

Danish labeling

Food sold in Denmark needs a Danish-language label covering product name, full ingredient list with allergens, manufacturing and expiry dates, storage conditions, net weight, and country of origin. We handle translation and supplementary stickering.

The Vietnamese Community in Denmark

IndicatorFigure
Officially registered (2022)16,141
Arrived1970s-1980s, boat-refugee resettlement
Main hubCopenhagen
Other hubsAarhus, Odense, Aalborg

The community is smaller than in Sweden or Norway but has a highly visible commercial footprint — Vietnamese restaurants are a fixture of Danish city dining across Copenhagen and beyond, which drives a steady stream of restaurant-supply shipments alongside family parcels.

What You Can Ship — and What’s Banned

Allowed

Processed foods: fish sauce, soy sauce, chili sauce, seasoning packets, instant noodles, dry rice noodles, pho noodles, vermicelli, canned vegetables and seafood, dried foods of all kinds, confectionery without non-EU animal gelatin.

Beverages: roasted and instant coffee, tea (phytosanitary certificate for plant products), bottled non-alcoholic drinks.

Non-food: clothing, footwear, small furniture, EU-compliant cosmetics, books, handicrafts, CE-marked electronics.

EU-banned categories from Vietnam

  • All meat and meat-derived products — fresh, frozen, dried, or processed, including pork floss (ruốc), dried beef, sausages
  • Fresh dairy from non-approved sources
  • Fresh eggs and egg products
  • Live fish and fresh seafood (frozen seafood is generally permitted)

Plant products

All plant material needs a phytosanitary certificate and clearance through a designated EU border control post.

A note on the Faroe Islands and Greenland

We deliver across the Danish Realm, including the Faroe Islands and Greenland — but both are outside the EU customs union, despite Denmark’s own EU membership. Shipments there follow separate customs terms, not the standard EVFTA/EU rules described above. Contact us for a specific quote if you’re shipping to either territory.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from Vietnam to Denmark take?

  • Express: 4-6 business days
  • Standard: 8-12 business days
  • Sea freight: 25-35 days

Peak seasons (Tết, Christmas) can extend these ranges.

Why is Danish VAT on food higher than in other EU countries?

Denmark applies a flat 25% VAT to everything, including food — it doesn’t offer the reduced grocery rate most EU members use. Parliament confirmed in December 2025 there’s no cut coming before the next election; any change is under discussion for 2028 at the earliest.

How does EVFTA help with Denmark-bound shipments?

EVFTA eliminates duty on ~99% of Vietnam-origin goods. Under €6,000, an origin declaration on the invoice is sufficient. Above €6,000, Danish customs wants the exporter’s REX number, which we arrange.

Can I ship dried meat, pork floss, or sausages to Denmark?

No. The EU bans all meat and meat-derived products from Vietnam, in fresh, frozen, dried, or processed form.

Are Vietnamese-only food labels accepted?

No. Retail food needs a Danish-language label with translated allergens, dates, and storage instructions. We handle translation and stickering.

Can I ship fish sauce and Vietnamese seasonings?

Yes. Bottled fish sauce, soy sauce, and dry seasoning packets are permitted processed foods. Pack for leak prevention given the transit distance.

Do you deliver to Vietnamese restaurants directly?

Yes. Restaurant-supply shipments — dried goods, sauces, spices — to businesses in Copenhagen, Aarhus, and other Danish cities are a routine part of what we ship, alongside family parcels.

Can you ship to Greenland or the Faroe Islands?

Yes, on request — but both territories sit outside the EU customs union even though they’re part of the Danish Realm, so terms differ from standard EU shipments. Contact us for specifics.

Is pickup free and is insurance included?

Yes to both. Free door pickup in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, and 100% declared-value insurance on every shipment.
