How airlines price extra baggage
There is no single model. Carriers flying from Vietnam use three different ones, which is exactly why comparing by eye is so hard:
- Per piece — Vietnam Airlines and Korean Air sell whole 23kg pieces. Five kilos over? You still buy a full piece.
- Per kilo — Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines bill each kilo, so cost scales linearly and gets punishing above 15kg.
- Weight packages — VietJet sells 20/30/40kg bundles in VND, cheapest when bought more than three hours before departure.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to ship or pay excess baggage?
It depends on your airline and how much extra you have. Low-cost carriers like VietJet sell 20kg baggage packages for around USD 40 on regional routes — hard to beat on price alone. Full-service carriers charge far more: Singapore Airlines bills about USD 27 per kilo from Vietnam to Europe, Emirates about USD 30, so 20kg of extras can exceed USD 500 while shipping the same weight costs a fraction of that. Where do these airline fees come from?
Every figure is taken from the airline's own published fee page — Vietnam Airlines' prepaid baggage table, VietJet's fees chart, Emirates' and Qatar Airways' per-kg matrices, Korean Air's excess baggage page, and Singapore Airlines' band table. Each result card links to its source and shows the date we last checked it (2026-08-07). Bamboo Airways does not publish international rates online, so we say so instead of guessing.
Why is the airline cost shown as a range?
Airlines price the same bag differently depending on when and where you buy. Pre-purchasing online is typically 30–50% cheaper than paying at the check-in desk, and Vietnam Airlines charges peak-season rates during Tet and summer. The low end of our range is the best published prepaid rate; the high end reflects airport or peak pricing.
Is the shipping price exact?
Yes. The shipping column reads the same Economy 2026 price card our sales team quotes from, by destination and weight — not an estimate. It excludes 8% VAT, matching how the airline fees are published. Fuel surcharges and remote-area fees can still apply to unusual destinations.
When does shipping make sense even if the airline is cheaper?
Airline baggage only works if you are on that flight with the items in hand. Shipping is the answer when you have already flown home, when your tailor or supplier finishes after departure, when the item is too bulky or fragile for a suitcase, or when you would rather not drag another 20kg through two airports and a customs hall.
