Frequently asked questions

What is volumetric weight and when is it applied?

Volumetric weight (also called dimensional or DIM weight) is how carriers estimate the space a package occupies in the cargo hold. Standard formula is (L × W × H in cm) divided by a divisor. When volumetric exceeds actual weight, the carrier bills on the volumetric figure — common for light but bulky items like pillows, plush toys, and handcraft.

Should I use divisor 5000 or 6000?

Use 5000 for express and parcel shipments via DHL, FedEx, and UPS — this is the standard divisor these integrators apply on both retail and contract pricing. Use 6000 for IATA air freight general cargo, common on larger air shipments that are not handled as express parcels.

Will the result match the carrier’s official quote?

The tool follows the standard volumetric formula, but the final invoice depends on fuel surcharge, remote-area fees, destination, service level, and any account-specific discounts. Use this result to validate quotes and understand cost structure — it does not replace an official quote.

How can I reduce volumetric weight?

Optimize packaging: remove void space, use a box that closely matches the goods, and avoid oversized cartons for small items. For handcraft or ceramics, pack tightly with thin protective inserts instead of thick foam blocks. If volumetric cost stays high, consider sea freight for larger orders.
