Shipping to Austria from Vietnam
Ship to Austria from Vietnam — Vienna, Graz, Salzburg. EVFTA duty relief, AGES food clearance, EU customs, door-to-door delivery to the DACH region.
Austria completes the German-speaking DACH cluster alongside Germany and Switzerland, but it sits on the EU side of that group, not the Swiss side — which changes the customs picture considerably. Vienna is home to a small, tight-knit Vietnamese community, estimated at around 5,000 people, many running long-established restaurants and small businesses. Vienna’s position as a crossroads between Western and Eastern Europe also makes it a natural connection point for onward shipments into neighboring Central European markets.
We ship from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by air direct to Vienna, and by sea via major EU seaports with onward road and rail transit into Austria — a landlocked country, so all ocean cargo arrives by a port-plus-inland-transport route rather than direct berth. EVFTA tariff preferences apply here exactly as they do across the rest of the EU, and German-language labeling for food shipments is handled at our end.
This page covers our service tiers, Austria’s customs and VAT structure — including a major food-VAT change taking effect in mid-2026 — what’s allowed and banned under EU food rules, and delivery across Austria’s nine states.

Austrian Customs, EVFTA, and VAT
Regulators you may interact with
| Agency | Role |
|---|---|
| AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety) | Food safety review, phytosanitary inspection |
| Austrian Customs Administration (Zoll) | Customs clearance under the Federal Ministry of Finance; duty and VAT collection |
VAT and EVFTA duty
| Charge | Rate |
|---|---|
| VAT (essential staple foods, from July 2026) | 4.9% (new super-reduced rate for milk, eggs, bread, fresh vegetables, and similar staples) |
| VAT (general food, most groceries) | 10% |
| VAT (some food/hospitality categories) | 13% |
| VAT (general goods) | 20% (standard rate) |
| EVFTA duty relief | ~99% of tariff lines at 0% on Vietnam-origin goods |
Austria introduced a new 4.9% super-reduced VAT rate for a defined list of essential foods from 1 July 2026 as part of an anti-inflation measure — one of the lowest food VAT rates in the EU. The existing 10% and 13% reduced rates continue to apply to food categories outside that essential-staples list.
Working out which EVFTA paperwork applies to your shipment is a three-step check:
- Is it a personal parcel under €150? It clears under the EU IOSS low-value import scheme — no origin paperwork needed.
- Is the commercial value under €6,000? An origin declaration on the commercial invoice is enough.
- Is it €6,000 or above? Austrian customs (Zoll) requires the exporter’s REX (Registered Exporter) number, which we register through the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry before your goods leave Vietnam.

Vietnamese Community in Austria
| Indicator | Figure |
|---|---|
| Estimated community size | ~5,000 |
| Primary hub | Vienna |
| Community profile | Small, established, concentrated in restaurant and small-business ownership |
Vienna hosts the large majority of Austria’s Vietnamese community. It’s a smaller diaspora than in neighboring Czech Republic or Germany, but a well-established one — many families have run Vietnamese restaurants and shops in the city for decades. Smaller numbers are based in Graz, Linz, Salzburg, and Innsbruck.
A Central European connection point
Because Vienna sits geographically between Western Europe and the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, we regularly coordinate shipments for customers who split time or business between Austria and neighboring Central European markets. If you’re also shipping to the Czech Republic or Germany, ask us about scheduling shipments together.
What You Can Ship — and What’s Banned
Allowed (high-priority categories)
Processed foods:
- Spices, seasonings, fish sauce, soy sauce, chili sauce
- Instant noodles, dry rice noodles, pho noodles, vermicelli
- Confectionery and packaged snacks
- Dried seafood (shrimp, squid, fish)
- Coffee and tea (phytosanitary certificate for plant-based products)
Non-food:
- Clothing, footwear, and accessories
- Small furniture and household items
- Cosmetics with EU-compliant ingredients
- Consumer electronics with CE marking
Items that won’t clear Austrian customs
These categories are confiscated at the border, not just delayed, regardless of how they’re packaged or declared:
- Meat and meat products of any kind — pork floss (ruốc), beef jerky, and sausages included, fresh, frozen, dried, or processed
- Dairy from sources the EU hasn’t approved
- Fresh eggs, and fresh or live seafood (frozen seafood is fine)
Sending a care package instead? Dried seafood, packaged snacks, and shelf-stable sauces cover most of the same ground without the confiscation risk.
Restricted
- Prescription medication: requires a doctor’s prescription on arrival
- Traditional herbal or medicinal preparations: subject to ingredient review under EU medicinal-product rules — check with us before shipping
- Alcohol and tobacco: subject to excise duty, quantity limits apply
Plant products and phytosanitary rules
All plant products require a phytosanitary certificate from Vietnam’s Plant Protection Department and must clear a designated EU border control post before onward delivery to Austria.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does shipping from Vietnam to Austria take?
- Express: 4-6 business days
- Standard: 8-12 business days
- Sea freight: 30-40 days (via a major EU seaport, then inland transit)
Customs clearance typically adds 1-4 business days; Tết and Christmas peak seasons can extend timelines.
Can you also ship to Germany or Switzerland alongside Austria?
Yes. Austria, Germany, and Switzerland form the DACH region, and we regularly coordinate shipments across all three. Note that Switzerland is not in the EU customs union, so it follows a different duty and paperwork process than Austria and Germany — ask us to confirm the right process for each destination.
How does EVFTA reduce duty on shipments to Austria?
Roughly 99% of tariff lines on Vietnam-origin goods carry no duty under EVFTA — for most shippers the practical question is only which paperwork route applies. Smaller commercial consignments need nothing beyond an origin declaration written onto the invoice. Once the value reaches €6,000 the Zoll expects a REX-registered exporter instead, and we complete that registration in Vietnam before the goods move, so the classification is settled long before anything reaches an Austrian border post.
Can I ship dried meat, pork floss, or sausages to Austria?
No. The EU bans all meat and meat-derived products from Vietnam — pork floss (ruốc), beef jerky, and sausages included, in fresh, frozen, or dried form. Dried seafood and plant-based alternatives ship without issue.
What’s Austria’s VAT on food?
From 1 July 2026, essential staples (milk, eggs, bread, fresh vegetables, and similar) drop to a new 4.9% super-reduced rate. Most other groceries remain at 10%, some food/hospitality categories at 13%, and the standard rate is 20%.
Can I ship traditional Vietnamese herbal medicine to Austria?
Possibly, with conditions. Austria applies EU rules on herbal and medicinal products, and some compounds are restricted. Talk to us before shipping — undeclared herbal shipments have a high confiscation rate at the border.
Is sea freight practical for a landlocked country like Austria?
Yes, for bulk cargo. There’s no direct berth, so ocean freight arrives at a major EU seaport and moves inland to Vienna by road or rail — 30-40 days total. It suits bulk commercial cargo and relocations where cost matters more than speed; for anything time-sensitive, Express or Standard Air is the more practical choice.
Do you offer free pickup and insurance?
Yes to both. Free door pickup in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi; 100% declared-value insurance included on every shipment.
Shipping across the rest of DACH? See our guides for Germany and Switzerland — note that Switzerland sits outside the EU customs union, so its process differs from Austria’s. Browse all destinations we ship to for the full list.
