Shipping to UAE from Vietnam

Shipping to UAE from Vietnam

Ship to the UAE from Vietnam — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah. ESMA-compliant, Halal-aware, full re-export support through Jebel Ali.

The UAE is the Gulf’s primary trade gateway — and for Vietnam-origin cargo, Jebel Ali is the deepwater port and Dubai International (DXB) the air hub that route shipments onward into the rest of the GCC, East Africa, and the wider Middle East. Gateway Express handles end-to-end logistics from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi into Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the northern emirates, with full ESMA labeling support and Halal-compliant documentation when required.

This page covers our service tiers, UAE customs and VAT, the ESMA Arabic-labeling rule that catches most first-time shippers, when Halal certification is mandatory, the Dubai re-export use case for businesses serving the broader Gulf, and how to book a pickup.

Mandatory Arabic labeling — ESMA rule

Every retail-ready product imported into the UAE must carry an Arabic-language label (Arabic-only or Arabic + English). The rule catches first-time shippers because labeling is enforced on printed packaging, not stickers in many product categories.

The label must include:

  • Product name in Arabic
  • Full ingredient list in descending order by weight
  • Manufacturing date and expiration date — printed on original packaging, not added by sticker for most food categories
  • Net weight or volume in metric units (g, ml, l)
  • Country of origin
  • Halal mark (when claimed) — UAE National Halal Mark preferred
  • Importer / distributor identification

Where Arabic stickers are permitted, they must be pre-approved by the relevant emirate’s regulator (Dubai Municipality or ADAFSA).

Need an ESMA labeling review before pickup? Email info@gatewayexpress.com.vn or call +84 938 373 343 — we’ll flag any labels that won’t clear at port.

Halal Certification — When It’s Required

The UAE applies Halal rules conservatively. The full list of categories requiring certification:

  • All meat and poultry products — no exceptions
  • Processed foods containing animal-derived ingredients (gelatin, animal fats, certain emulsifiers)
  • Confectionery containing pork-derived gelatin is prohibited entirely
  • Cosmetics and pharmaceuticals containing animal derivatives

Halal certification process

  1. Manufacturer registers with ESMA or with Dubai Municipality
  2. Submission of product file: ingredient list, manufacturing process, lab analysis
  3. On-site audit by a UAE-recognised Halal certification body
  4. Certificate issued — typically 1 to 3 years validity
  5. Re-certification required if formulation or facility changes

Critical: Halal certificates from non-UAE-recognised bodies are rejected at port. Always verify the certification body is on the UAE-recognised list before shipping.

Vietnamese coffee and tea — usually exempt

Pure roasted coffee, tea leaves, and similar single-ingredient plant products typically don’t require Halal certification. Instant coffee mixes that include dairy creamers or non-dairy creamers (often containing animal-derived emulsifiers) do need a Halal review.

What You Can Ship — and What’s Prohibited

Allowed (subject to ESMA labeling and, where relevant, Halal)

Food:

  • Dried seasonings and spices (no animal-derived gelatin)
  • Vietnamese coffee, tea, instant coffee (Halal-reviewed if mixed)
  • Instant noodles, dried rice noodles, vermicelli
  • Confectionery (no pork-derived gelatin)
  • Dried seafood (dried shrimp, dried fish)
  • Canned vegetables and fruits

Non-food:

  • Clothing, footwear, leather goods
  • Small furniture, household items
  • Cosmetics (no prohibited ingredients)
  • Books, handicrafts, lacquerware
  • Consumer electronics

Prohibited

  • Pork and any pork-derived product — strictly banned, including gelatin and lard
  • Meat without Halal certification
  • Narcotics (including poppy seeds used as spice)
  • Gambling items: dice, playing cards, casino chips
  • Weapons, explosives, ammunition

Restricted

  • Alcohol: 4 litres or 48 cans per person, 18+, must be declared (commercial alcohol shipments require licensed importer)
  • Tobacco: 400 cigarettes or 2 kg loose tobacco
  • Religiously or culturally sensitive material: screened on entry

Pork contamination of an otherwise compliant shipment results in rejection of the entire consignment. We pre-screen ingredient lists before pickup to avoid this.

Dubai as a Re-Export Hub

Why Dubai matters for Vietnamese exporters: roughly half of UAE imports are re-exported into the wider Gulf, East Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) and Dubai South are bonded ecosystems where you can:

  • Land cargo duty-deferred in JAFZA and pay UAE duty only when goods leave the zone
  • Re-package, relabel, or kit for downstream markets (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kenya, Tanzania)
  • Hold inventory with on-demand release as orders come in
  • Avoid double duty — goods re-exported from JAFZA never trigger UAE customs duty

Gateway Express partners with JAFZA-licensed agents for clients running this model. If you’re shipping into Dubai for downstream Gulf or Africa distribution rather than UAE retail, talk to us before booking — sea freight to Jebel Ali plus a JAFZA agreement is materially cheaper than direct shipping to each Gulf country.

Ramadan — Plan Around the Calendar

Ramadan substantially impacts UAE logistics and customs throughput:

FactorImpact during Ramadan
Port operating hoursReduced 50-70%
Customs clearance time+10-20 days vs. normal
Pre-Ramadan demand spikeFood and gift volumes +50%

Recommendations:

  • Ship 2-3 weeks before Ramadan begins for guaranteed pre-Ramadan arrival
  • Pre-file paperwork digitally (FIRS for Dubai) — manual filing is slowest during the month
  • For commercial Ramadan-themed inventory, plan inbound at least 4 weeks ahead

Ramadan 2026: approximately mid-February to mid-March 2026 (exact dates depend on the lunar calendar). Confirm before booking time-sensitive shipments.

Heat-Safe Packaging for Summer

UAE summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. Sensitive shipments need adapted packaging:

  • Materials: ESMA-compliant, food-grade
  • Moisture barriers: essential for dried seafood, spices, ground coffee
  • UV protection: dark or opaque packaging for light-sensitive products
  • Desiccants: silica gel for sea-freight cargo
  • Temperature-controlled containers: for chocolates, cosmetics with low melt points, and sensitive electronics

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from Vietnam to the UAE take?

  • Express: 5-7 business days
  • Standard: 7-10 business days
  • Sea freight: 18-25 days (13-20 days at sea via Singapore or Colombo, plus port handling)

Add 10-20 days during Ramadan.

Can I ship Vietnamese fish sauce to the UAE?

Yes. Fish sauce is a permitted processed seafood product. It must carry an Arabic label (or Arabic + English) showing ingredients, manufacturing and expiration dates, net volume in metric units, and country of origin. A sanitary certificate may be required for commercial volumes — we handle this.

Why is Halal certification mandatory?

The UAE requires Halal certification for all meat, poultry, and processed foods containing animal-derived ingredients. Products without recognised certification are rejected at port. Pure plant-based products (most coffee, tea, plain dried foods) typically don’t require Halal — we’ll review your ingredient list before pickup.

Can I ship dried beef or shredded pork to the UAE?

Pork and pork-derived products: never. Beef and chicken jerky: only with Halal certification from a UAE-recognised body. Most Vietnamese dried-meat products from non-Halal-certified facilities cannot enter the UAE.

How is import tax calculated?

5% customs duty on CIF (cost + insurance + freight) plus 5% VAT on (CIF + duty) — combined effective tax of about 10.25% of CIF. Personal shipments under the emirate’s de minimis threshold (AED 300 in Dubai, AED 1,000 in Abu Dhabi) usually clear without duty.

Is shipping during Ramadan different?

Yes. Port operations reduce 50-70%, customs clearance slows by 10-20 days, and pre-Ramadan demand spikes by 50%+. Ship 2-3 weeks before Ramadan begins for reliable pre-month arrival.

Does Vietnamese coffee need Halal certification?

Pure roasted coffee: no. Instant coffee mixes with dairy or non-dairy creamers: yes, ingredients must be reviewed. We can pre-screen specific brands before shipping.
