Sơn mài — traditional Vietnamese lacquerware — is one of the country's most celebrated art forms. Every piece is built up from 16 or more layers of natural lacquer (called sơn ta, a resin tapped from the cây sơn tree) applied by hand to a wooden or bamboo base. Each layer is left to cure fully before the next is added, and the surface is hand-polished between coats. The result is a deep, lustrous finish that can take months to complete.
Unlike mass-produced decorative items, authentic sơn mài is weighty, temperature-sensitive, and — once damaged — almost impossible to restore. That combination makes it one of the pieces tourists most often regret not shipping properly.
What sơn mài pieces do tourists typically buy?
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is the primary buying hub, with galleries and studios concentrated along Đồng Khởi street and the surrounding District 1 art quarter. Hanoi's Old Quarter also has a strong selection. The most common pieces tourists want to ship home include:
Why sơn mài needs specialised shipping
Standard luggage or generic courier packing is not appropriate for sơn mài. Several properties make it unusually demanding:
Temperature sensitivity
Natural lacquer is vulnerable to sustained heat. Cargo holds on summer routes through the Middle East can exceed 35°C — enough to soften the lacquer surface and cause adhesion failure between layers. We route sơn mài shipments via climate-aware carrier selections, especially from May to September.
Vibration and cracking risk
The lacquer surface can crack along the grain of the wooden base if the piece vibrates against hard surfaces in transit. Foam corner protectors and internal padding are non-negotiable — not optional extras.
Weight
Multi-layer lacquer on thick wooden substrates is heavy. A 40cm × 60cm panel typically weighs 3–5kg. Large bespoke floor panels can exceed 20kg — beyond airline checked-baggage practical limits and requiring custom crating for safe shipping.
Surface scratch sensitivity
The hand-polished lacquer finish dulls permanently if scratched. Even light contact with packaging tape applied directly to the surface can leave marks. The piece must be wrapped without any adhesive touching the lacquer.

Insurance for lacquerware shipments
We treat sơn mài as art for insurance purposes. The standard recommendation is 2–3% of the declared value, covering breakage, lacquer surface damage, and loss in transit. For a piece purchased at US$500, that equates to US$10–15 — a straightforward decision given the replacement cost.
Key discipline: always declare the actual gallery purchase price. Under-declaration voids coverage and can also cause customs complications at the destination. Keep your gallery receipt — it serves as proof of value for both insurance and import declaration.
For high-value bespoke commissions (multi-panel installations, large floor pieces), contact us before shipping so we can arrange appropriate declared-value documentation and select the most suitable insurance tier.
Customs by destination
Sơn mài typically qualifies as original art or decorative handicraft, which attracts favourable duty treatment in most countries. Exact classification depends on the individual piece — we advise at quote stage.
United States
Paintings and original art under HS 9701 are often duty-free. Commercial-grade decoration may be classified differently. Declared value drives any applicable state sales/use tax post-August 2025 for low-value imports.
Australia
Art and decorative items clear smoothly under AUD 1,000 duty-free. Lacquer is an inert material — no biosecurity concerns. GST (10%) applies above the AUD 1,000 threshold.
United Kingdom
Original art attracts 5% reduced VAT under HMRC art import rules. Commercial decorative items pay standard 20% VAT. Sculptures and 3D decorative pieces may classify under HS 9703.
Canada
CPTPP provides 0% duty for handicrafts and original art from Vietnam. GST/HST applies above CAD 20 for commercial imports. Gift threshold is CAD 60.
Germany / EU
EVFTA (EU–Vietnam FTA) provides 0% duty for original art. 19% German VAT applies above €150 for commercial imports (€45 gift threshold). IOSS applies for B2C e-commerce-type declarations.
Antique lacquerware: export licence required
Pieces produced before 1945 are classified as cultural heritage under Vietnamese law and require an export licence from Vietnam's Ministry of Culture. Attempting to export antique sơn mài without a licence risks seizure at the border.
Modern sơn mài (post-1945) has no export restriction. If you are purchasing from a reputable gallery, request a certificate of authenticity that confirms the production date — this is standard practice for high-value pieces and useful for both customs and insurance.
Shipping rates for sơn mài
Final rates depend on the weight and dimensions of your piece, whether custom crating is needed, your chosen insurance level, and the destination country. Because sơn mài varies so widely — from a 200g jewellery box to a 25kg bespoke floor panel — we don't publish per-kg rates. Every quote is assessed individually.

Sơn mài shipping FAQ
Will the lacquer crack during shipping?
It can — if packed incorrectly. The lacquer surface cracks when the piece vibrates against hard surfaces or when temperature changes are rapid. We prevent this with foam corner protectors, bubble wrap, a rigid board sandwich, and double-boxing. Large panels get custom wooden crates. Pieces that survive the packing stage almost always arrive undamaged.
Can I ship antique sơn mài pieces older than 1945?
Items produced before 1945 are classified as cultural heritage under Vietnamese law and require an export licence from the Ministry of Culture before they can leave the country. Modern sơn mài (post-1945) has no export restriction. When buying from a gallery, ask for a certificate of authenticity that confirms the production date — this protects you at both customs and for insurance purposes.
How is sơn mài packed differently from other art?
The key difference is no adhesive contact with the lacquer surface — even masking tape applied directly can dull the finish permanently. We wrap every piece in acid-free tissue or glassine first, then bubble wrap secured around the tissue, foam corner protectors on all edges, and a double-walled box. Panels over 10kg or 80cm get a custom timber crate.
Is lacquerware duty-free when importing to my country?
In many cases yes — sơn mài paintings often qualify as original art under HS 9701 (US, some EU classifications), which carries 0% import duty. Decorative boxes and trays may be classified as handicrafts rather than fine art, which can attract a small duty. We advise on the likely classification at quote stage. Keep your gallery receipt as it supports the art declaration.
How much does it cost to ship sơn mài from Vietnam?
We do not publish per-kg rates for lacquerware because the final cost depends on the weight and dimensions of the specific piece, whether custom crating is required, your chosen insurance level, and the destination. Contact us via WhatsApp with a photo and approximate dimensions — we typically provide a quote within a few hours during business hours.
